What do I need to apply for a Handset Rent to Own device?
You will need the MoMo App and have an active Mobile Money (MoMo) wallet, you will need a 30% upfront payment when completing your application, you will need a valid delivery address.
How do customers check their balance?
Customers will need to check their balance on the MoMo App, under “Handset Rent to Own” product menu.
What is the instalment date for the device?
Should the deposit for the device be successfully paid before or on the 15th of the month, the first instalment will be due on the 1st day of that next month, should the deposit be successfully paid after the 15th of the month, the first instalment will be due on the 1st day of the following month + 1. Thereafter, the instalment is due on the 1st day of the months following until fully paid up.
How do I pay my instalment?
On the due date of payment an automatic deduction will be done on the customer's MoMo account. The customer can also make their own payments via the MTN MoMo App. Yes, should a customer wish to settle their next instalment before the due date, the customer will need to navigate through the MoMo App, choose the Handset Rental option and then the option to make a payment.
If I default on an instalment?
If no payment is received within the 3 days, then the locking process is initiated. An in-App reminder and SMS (zero rated) is sent to the customer to make a payment. Should no payment be received, the deduction process will be run daily on all overdue accounts to recover the amount owed. If no payment is received within the 3 days, then the locking process is initiated. Grace days for payment is set at 3 days, thereafter the device is locked
If partial payment is made on an instalment?
A partial payment will be done, and the customer will have access to their phone for a prorated number of days.
Once a Default instalment is settled?
If a payment is deducted, and the customer is up to date, then the device is unlocked. Partial payment will be accepted, this will give the customer access to their phone for the prorated number of days that the partial payment has paid of the monthly instalment. It is important to note that the customer's device MUST have a data connection for the device to unlock.
Is the Product available on USSD?
No.
Can I apply for more than one phone?
The customer can only pay for one phone at a time. Once they finish paying for one, they can apply for another!
What device do I qualify for?
You will be presented in the App journey on the device you are eligible for based on qualifying criteria.
What happens if the device is lost or stolen?
The customer will contact the center to report the device as lost or stolen. The device will be locked remotely to protect your personal information. The customer will remain liable for the Rental Payment for the Rental Period.
How do I qualify?
Register on MTN MoMo, you will be advised of eligibility, to increase your chances of eligibility you need to be an active MoMo wallet user. South African ID. Over the age of 18 years. Natural person.
If the device is locked due to non-payment of instalment, what service do I have access to?
When the Handset is locked, the customer will have access to a network set emergency number, the MTN Support Desk Number, and the MTN MoMo wallet, in order to top up the MoMo Wallet to pay the default, in order for the handset to be unlocked immediately.
Which devices are available through MTN MoMo?
The devices available will be displayed in the customer journey on the MTN MoMo App once logged into the app.
What happened at the end of the contract?
At the end of the contract, the customer will have two options:
1) Transfer of ownership once the last instalment is successfully settled.
2) Return the device in good working order, together with accessories and user manuals originally provided.The customer may be charged a reasonable cancellation penalty in accordance with the Consumer Protection Act, 2008 and its Regulations. The amount of the penalty will be communicated to the customer upon receipt of the termination notice.
Does the Handset come with a Warranty?
Yes, the phones come with a manufacturer’s warranty limited to manufacturer’s defects, you can contact us for more information.
I’m not an MTN-Customer, can I apply for a loan?
Yes, if you are a registered MoMo customer, you may apply. Remember MoMo customers don’t have to be on the MTN network to register for MoMo.
Do MTN staff get preferential rates?
No, all MoMo customers are subjected to the same rates.
Can I buy a device for someone else?
Yes, a customer can buy the device for someone but that customer will be responsible for all Rental payments as per the Terms and Conditions.
